Event HQ Update: VOR Auckland Stopover

Issue date

100 Days To Go!

The Race Village for the Auckland Stopover opens in exactly 100 days’ time on Friday 27 February 2015.

The team at Mayo&, together with stakeholders, sponsors and contractors, has been working hard over the past few months to ensure that a fun, functional, free and safe Race Village will open to the public on time.  There’s still plenty of work to be done over the next 100 days but we’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Race Village to enjoy everything there is on offer.

We’re marking the 100 days to go by releasing our new Race Village flyover video – watch it here.  It reveals the look of the Race Village and how the the Viaduct will be transformed into an entertainment hub for the 17 days of the Auckland Stopover.  You can see all the activations and activities in the Race Village and the Marine Showcase, the location of the team bases and where the boats will be moored.

40 Years, 40 Faces

The Auckland Stopover, in partnership with the Voyager Maritime Museum, is proud to announce the '40 Years, 40 Faces’ photographic exhibition will be coming to New Zealand.

This exhibition has been created by Volvo Ocean Race SLU, and celebrates the 40 years of the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race).  The photographs capture the extremes of sailing and include iconic images from the 40 year history of the Race beginning in 1973. Eleven of the many New Zealanders who have participated in the Race over the years are featured among the 40 Faces.

The exhibition will be on show at the Voyager Maritime Museum from Saturday 17 January to Sunday 22 March.

Leg 2 Start

After the tight and eventful Leg 1 from Alicante, Cape Town has been hosting the fleet of seven VO65 boats over the past weeks. The boats have all been out of the water for inspection, measurement and repair, and today set off to begin Leg 2 through the Indian Ocean on the 6,125 nm race to Abu Dhabi.

The Cape Town In-Port Race was held on Saturday 15 November and was won by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing over Team Brunel in second and SCA in third.

This free programme invites schools to visit the Race Village and experience activities related to the Race and sailing between Monday 2 to Friday 6 March 2015.
