Entries are now open for the 2025 PIC Coastal Classic, New Zealand's most iconic coastal yacht race, and expectations are building for a bumper fleet when the race returns this Labour Weekend.
After a quieter edition last year, with many crews overseas in Barcelona for the America’s Cup and spring conditions making things difficult, there’s real buzz about getting back on the start line and making this year one to remember.
Adding to the excitement is word that Wild Thing, the legendary Australian super maxi, may be making an appearance. At 30 metres long, the Sydney to Hobart veteran would be one of the largest and fastest yachts ever to contest the event, bringing a dose of trans-Tasman firepower and a spectacle that would be hard to miss.
Organisers are expecting a strong showing across all divisions, with many regulars looking to return after missing last year. Whether it’s a seasoned campaigner or a new team trying the race for the first time, the PIC Coastal Classic remains a highlight of the local sailing calendar - competitive, scenic, and always an adventure.
In a move aimed at simplifying the entry process and making the race more accessible, a flat entry fee will apply across all divisions this year. It's a small but significant change that reflects the club's desire to create a level playing field and welcome back crews who may have taken a break or are entering for the first time. The 119-nautical-mile course remains the same for everyone - what’s changing is how easy it is to be part of it.
Ahead of the race, organisers will also host a popular three-part clinic series to help crews prepare, including the return of the personal safety clinic, introduced last year. Designed with practical drills and emergency response in mind, the session is a great refresher and especially valuable for newer sailors or those taking on night coastal passages for the first time. While the responsibility lies with the person in charge (skipper), the clinic reinforces that every crew member has a part to play in safety and seamanship.
