Embark opens opportunities for race coaches

Issue date

The first batch of race coaches trained under Yachting New Zealand's new online model have been certified and it's expected many more will follow.

Yachting New Zealand coach developer Kirsten Moratz travelled to Napier last week to assess four coaches who had completed the online version of the race coach course on Embark. Moratz then assessed them during a training session, watching a briefing, on-water session and then a debrief.

"The coaches in Napier did a fantastic job," Moratz said. "The kids were having a blast the whole time, and so were the coaches.

"It was so cool to be a part of their community for an evening. Thank you to Napier Sailing Club for having me."

The race coach course can be used in a variety of ways.

Some who do the course have a lot of sailing but little coaching experience while others are experienced learn to sail coaches looking to upskill and improve their own coaching.

There are also some looking to coach at regattas while others are volunteer coaches wanting to learn more to take their club sailing to the next level.

"Whatever your reasons for taking it, the race coach course has many amazing resources for any level of coach, helping you to plan, teach and give feedback," Moratz said. "It is a great way to either jumpstart or boost your coaching journey."

Moratz is available to assess coaches for the practical component if four or more coaches from the same region have completed the online component. This can either be done at a club or regatta.

Alternatively, you can video yourself running a session and send it through to Moratz for assessment if you don't have four coaches looking to complete the course.
