Elliott 5.9

Elliott 5.9 traveller series about to kick off

Issue date

The start of the Elliott 5.9 Traveller Series is only a couple of weeks away which will see a weekend of competitive racing in Napier and organisers are expecting a fleet of at least 10 boats.

The Traveller Series consists of five regattas across the North Island from April to October with a typical race weekend looking to belt out 10 sprint races over the two days. The first will be hosted by the Napier Sailing Club on April 4-5.

The national championships will also be at Sandspit towards the end of May. This hotly-contested three-day event gets the best of both worlds with top sailing conditions in Kawau Bay combined with superb hospitality at the Sandspit Yacht Club, with all the required facilities at the neighbouring waterside Holiday Park for this social yet competitive one-design fleet.

“The class continues to attract considerable interest with 16 boats competing in the 2019 season and several boats changing hands during the year mixing up the results across the superb level of racing,” said class president Stu Clarke, who is also owner and skipper of Slam Dunk.

“At present there are several boats for sale from a rebuild option to entry level boats and the opportunity to own Retro, one of the smartest boats in the fleet that is race-ready to hit the water and sail fast.”

The class association have been active during the year with a member and supporter survey, updated database, increased communications via Facebook and the newsletter; and are working on a refreshed website to be launched in the coming months.

So, if you are looking for a boat to buy, charter for a regatta, or simply want to get on the water in a crew spot on one of these awesome one-design sport boats, get in touch.
