Elliott 5.9 Association Update: April 2013

Issue date

There's plenty on with the active Elliott 5.9 Fleet: the 2013 Nationals have just concluded, in this update you can find info on the upcoming traveller series, new boat owners, 2014 Nationals, equipment available and more...

2013 Nationals

If you didn't sail you missed a great event.  The E5.9's had a fantastic regatta with some close racing, great weather and created quite an impression amongst the other fleets.  Thank you to Doyle Sails and PIC Insurance Brokers for supporting the event.  Thanks also to Cody Banks and his family who provided the launch to transport the bulk of the crews to the Motuihe Island party mid regatta,

Results

2. Animal Crackers

Heat wins were shared around 6 boats which really showed how close the racing was.  The Ranking Trophy was won by Chris Maddock and his Animal Crackers crew in what was a very impressive first-up performance.  This is awarded for best performance against seeding - Craig Coulam was the first winner in Voodoo last year.  Animal Crackers won the spot prize of a new Doyle Spinnaker.

There are regatta reports on Sail-World and here's the update from the Yachting NZ site: http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/news/201304/manning-robertson-whitburn-win-e59-nationals

Great to have Rapido with Mike, Kirsten and Jackson join us before the boat heads south.  It was also great to see Keith Hogan sailing on Zoots - even showing some interest in rejoining the class.  Also Matt Stechmann who borrowed Blownaway and impressed with some great races - Matt is committed to getting a boat when he returns from duty with Artemis.

Our intention in joining the regatta was to show the class off and I have had several enquiries about joining the class since the regatta.

Boat changes

Welcome to Fritz and Conrad, new owners of Brilliant in Tauranga.  The guys are doing some sailing locally and we hope to see them in Opua in May.

We also understand Lambada may have sold and will be heading to Auckland...to a past national champion in the E5.9 class!

We are also anticipating Nevis, Sub60 and Voodoo rejoining the circuit in 2013.

2013 Traveller Series

The dates for the 2013 Traveller Series are set.  We have decided to forgo Turangi this year.  Here are the dates and schedule:

Opua - 25/26 May
Marsden Cove - 27/28 July
Auckland Champs - 14/15 September
Gulf Harbour - 19/20 October
Sandspit - 23/24 November

You need to be a financial member ($50) for 2013-14 - please complete the form attached and send it in soon - prior to the first event (or pay me at the first regatta).  Any payment from now will take you through to 31 May 2014.

If you use on-line banking, please ensure you use your surname and boat name as a reference.

Boats must be weighed prior to the series and carry any correctors - this was discussed and agreed at the AGM.  If this affects you (i.e. your boat has not been weighed, or has had changes affecting the weight) than drop me a line and I will liaise with Dave Cochran.

Opua Event details - 25-26 May

  • The race details for Opua are attached to this email.  This event is looking to be a big fleet with some new owners and some returning boats.
  • Our PRO will once again be Paddy Simms.
  • For those requiring accomodation, this is the place we stayed last year - it is a reasonable price and suits a large group well!  http://www.pinelodgebayofislands.co.nz/

2014 Nationals

At the AGM the venue and timing of the 2014 Nationals was discussed.  It has been agreed that the 2014 Nationals will be in November, to cap off the Traveller Series.  The Venue is yet to be decided.

We are also planning a new type of event in March 2014 - stay tuned for details!
