Elliott 5.9

Elliot 5.9 Southern Circuit confirmed

Issue date

The Elliott 5.9 Traveller Series wraps up next month at Sandspit but there will still be plenty of activity in the class, especially with the dates for the newly inaugurated Elliot 5.9 Southern Circuit finalised.

The Elliott 5.9 Southern Circuit will consist of three regattas, starting with the Elliott 5.9 South Island Championships at Lake Aviemore over Labour weekend. The full details of the series is as follows:

  • Southern Circuit #1 - Lake Aviemore, October 21-23 (includes South Island champs)
  • Southern Circuit #2 - Lyttleton, December 3-4
  • Southern Circuit #3 - Nelson, January 21-22

With more than 10 boats expected for the championship and series, the Southern Series should again provide the close one-design racing the Elliott 5.9 is known for.

Full details and entry information for the Southern Circuit is available on the Elliott 5.9 website

The fourth round of the Traveller Series heads to the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club this weekend, when much of the interest on the potential battle between R+R (helmed by Craig Satterthwaite) and Shapeshifter (Brett Elliott).

Shapeshifter have consistently challenged R+R at the top of the leaderboard this season and scored a comfortable win at the last regatta in Whitianga. With only two regattas remaining, bragging rights are up for grabs.

An interesting sideline to this battle may well be the presence of Cameron Thorpe, who recently won the Farr 1020 national championships and will be taking over the helm of Bloodline for this regatta.

While this relatively scratch Bloodline crew may lack some Elliott 5.9 experience, the boat is well set up and could push for podium places.
