East Coast Juniorsail Camp

Issue date

A good turnout of young sailors attended the three day East Coast Juniorsail camp hosted by the Wairoa Yacht Club. A mixture of boats and sailors from Gisborne, Wairoa and Napier with the sunny days and a nice breeze the fleet set off for the shingle bank at the river mouth.

After the competition to collect some bones, fish skeletons and anything else that looked weird we set off for the sail back to the club and food which is even more important than sailing sometimes. Couldn’t quite get the night sail in as a bit of extra breeze came up the river, but maybe next year.

The next day we set off for the destination sail up river, under the main highway bridge for lunch and then beyond. At last year’s camp we thought we had set a distance record up river that would never be broken, but the team this year did extremely well getting a good distance further on. With the main focus of these camps being having fun in your boats it was great to see the rig climbing still a favourite and the Opti kids having a sail in the starlings and the starling guys having a crack in the laser radial.

Big thanks to Jill Metz Mayhead and the Wairoa shore team(maybe that should be feeding out team) and also to Alex Mayhead(Wairoa) and Peter Miller(Gisborne) for their coaching input. Wairoa YC is always a friendly club with some good young sailors coming through the ranks.
