Dave's Desk - an update from the CEO

Issue date

This is a message I had hoped I wouldn’t have to write as Auckland moves into alert level 3 with the rest of the country at level 2 but we need to remember we did exceptionally well as a nation last time and can do it again.

Hopefully the heightened restrictions will be in place only until midnight on Friday but we need to be prepared to hunker down for longer if that is what is required.

That means the offices at Yachting New Zealand are now closed and staff are working from home.

Yachting and boating clubs in the Auckland area (from Wellsford to Pukekohe) need to close and all activities to be suspended in line with government guidelines.

Clubs within the Auckland area will need to make a decision about weekend events, given alert level 3 is in place only until Friday night at this stage, but we really don’t know what the situation will be like later in the week.

You can find more information about what the different alert levels mean for yachting and boating clubs here and the Sport New Zealand website also clearly outlines the various alert level tables.

This is a fluid situation and we will be consulting with Sport New Zealand and the Government to get more clarity and will update you when we have more information.

It’s important to remember that we need to stick together and stay positive. We will come out of this again but this event, and evidence of what is happening overseas, highlights how vulnerable we are if we don’t follow the correct protocols.

Hopefully this is only a small blip and life as we knew it yesterday will return shortly.

In the meantime, stay safe, be kind and look after your friends and whanau.
