Become a Coastguard Volunteer Radio Operator today!

Issue date

Be part of an incredible team that saves lives at sea. Coastguard’s volunteer Radio Operators work one shift a month on weekends and public holidays supporting the full time staff of the Coastguard Operations Centre. Shifts are usually 6 hours, generally held between the hours of 7.00am to 8pm.

Coastguard operates from the Marine Rescue Centre at Mechanics Bay.

They also ask you to attend one continuing education evening per month on a weekday. They will train you and buddy you on your initial shifts, and if you don’t have a VHF licence, they will give you that training too.

While boating experience and knowledge of some of New Zealand’s harbours are helpful, these are not essential.

Coastguard does require you to have;

• Good hearing (with or without aids)

• Reasonable keyboard skills (40wpm)

• Legible handwriting

• An ability to keep calm in emergencies

• A voice and accent that is understandable over the airwaves

• An ability to take down numbers and details accurately
