Bay of Islands Sailing Week – Racing starts today

Issue date

With racing getting underway today at Bay of Islands Sailing Week, regatta headquarters was all go yesterday for registration. The on-site media team sent this update…

Pre Race Day with a temperature of 27-28 degrees. Not too much wind, but it’s tomorrow on Race Day One that we want Mother Nature to come to the party.

Currently forecast is light until mid morning when the bay breeze just might come up with 10 – 15 knots.  Same routine as last year this morning; the North Sails Tent is erected, Cowley’s trucks  are all over the place, with sponsor’s banners and names everywhere -  as they should be. By 3.00pm there is order and ‘we’re ready to roll’.

The morning saw various crews of both super yachts and Bay of Islands Sailing Week yachts, working on various sails and other boat parts spread out across the marina. We spoke with Dawn Riley from Silencio the 56 metre power house, which carries thirty crew when racing. Dawn is best known from the four America’s Cups she has sailed in past years.

We spoke with George Hendy from Georgia. He pointed out ‘Georgia One’ at the dock which is now owned by John Muir.  The two boats are racing in different divisions; Georgia in Division A and Georgia One in Division B. Emirates Team New Zealand’s Jeremy Lomas and Rob Salthouse are both crewing on Georgia.

There are many big names at Bay of Islands Sailing Week this year on both Divisional yachts and on Super Yachts. We will do our best to pass on who is here and which boats they’re on.

The briefing for Judges and support boat crews was held at Northland Spars and Rigging, where Bay Regatta uniforms and race details were distributed. A very casual gathering.  Race Day One on Wednesday – “bring it on’.
