'Bad time for a rig check': Wilkinson, Dawson slip to third after pitch-pole

Issue date

A mishap in the last race of the second day has seen Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson slide down the Nacra 17 leaderboard at the 2023 Lanzarote International Regatta.

The Kiwi pair, who started the day in the leaders' yellow bibs, pitch-poled halfway through the last race in choppy conditions.

"We had a few challenges today - good starts, good pace but didn't prioritise shifts enough in the swelly conditions," Wilkinson said.

"We also picked a bad time to do a rig check in the middle of the last race. We gave up a top three but it goes straight into the top three best pitch-poles we have had!"

The setback saw the pair finish in 19th place in the race, after scores of 4 and 7 in the first two and a drop to third overall on 20 points - seven points behind French pair Billy Besson and Noa Ancian.

Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco from Argentina are third on 14 points.

China’s Huicong Mai and Linlin Chen put in an excellent performance in the first race of the session to get the winner’s gun, a result that lifts them to 13th overall.

Wilkinson is looking forward to four more qualifying races overnight Thursday, ahead of the medal race: "The game is still wide open with two days to go."
