Auckland commodores come together on Steinlager 2

Issue date

Steinlager 2 is one of the world's most iconic offshore boats and it provided the perfect platform for Auckland-based commodores to get together yesterday, especially as strong winds buffeted the city.

As many as 25 commodores from Auckland clubs and a handful of Yachting New Zealand staff went sailing on Steinlager 2 last night. Yachting New Zealand's two northern regional support officers meet with the commodores on an annual basis but this was a gathering with a difference after the New Zealand Sailing Trust kindly donated the use of Steinlager 2.

"They approached us because they have a growing interest from our clubs and have always supported club sailing," Yachting New Zealand regional support officer Raynor Haagh said. "They felt it was an opportunity to help facilitate our annual gathering in a unique setting and a chance to showcase what they do."

The turbulent weather that hit Auckland yesterday threatened to derail the sailing aspect of the evening as gusts in excess of 50 knots were recorded in the harbour. But the wind eased sufficiently for Steinlager 2, which famously won all six legs of the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race, to head out of the Viaduct.

A number of commodores took a turn on the wheel and others were put to work on the grinders.

"Everyone had a great time," Haagh said. "It was a really enjoyable and worthwhile exercise. It was a great chance for us to meet with old and new commodores and for them to connect with other clubs.

"They can share ideas, talk about challenges they may be facing or have been through and also strengthen ties when it comes to supporting regattas held by neighbouring clubs, which is really important."

Yachting New Zealand host a commodores conference every two years, when representatives from all 108 club affiliated to Yachting New Zealand are invited to attend a weekend to discuss common issues. Details of next year's one will be shared once a date and venue are confirmed.

Haagh and fellow northern regional support officer Hayden Whitburn, who looks after clubs north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, will continue to liaise with clubs on an ongoing basis and also invited clubs to contact them if they had any questions.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust provide experiences largely for youth to sail on Steinlager 2 or Lion New Zealand and teach the values of leadership, teamwork, courage and environmental awareness. The boats are also available for charter by clubs, community groups, schools and businesses.
