The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's youth training programme is seen as a world leader, with many graduates going on to achieve international and national success.
Applications for the 2018-19 programme close on March 31 and are open to young sailors aged 15-22. The course delivers intensive sail training in a disciplined environment and is the country’s most comprehensive and advanced.
It costs $2095, which includes boats, all coaching, uniform and RNZYS junior membership as well as various fleet and match racing regattas both nationally and internationally. Training is held on the weekends starting at 9am and finishing around 5pm (4pm in winter).
The RNZYS youth training programme started in November 1987 and has produced more than 500 graduates, with many achieving success in the likes of the America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, World Match Racing events, national championships and Extreme Sailing Series.
The 11-month course is structured to help athletes excel in all areas both on and off the water and provides an indepth focus on advanced aspects of sailing including racing rules, sail trim, boat maintenance, fitness and injury prevention in addition to life skills such as goal setting and speech making. Upon completion of the year, students will graduate or can reapply for another year.
