Al Gair and ‘Velsheda’ win Etchell Nationals

Issue date

The Etchell National Championships were sailed from the Royal Akarana Yacht Club April 28/29. Six races over the two race days saw both extremes of race conditions, everything from 30 + knots on the first day of sailing, and fickle light patchy on day two.

Back fresh from the 2012 World Championships in Sydney, Alistair Gair and his Velsheda crew nearly did a clean sweep of the regatta, winning five of the six races and performing exceptionally well in Saturday’s breeze and chop.

Nine boats turned up for the competition which, if gauging by the Tuesday night sprint series in Auckland, was due to be no less than fiercely competitive.

1.       Alistair Gair, Dave Dioney, Derek Scott, Dave Ridley (RNZYS

2.       Andrew Wills, Anatole Masfen, Matt Kelway (RAYC)

3.       Brian Jones, Rob Bassett, John Booth (RNZYS)

4.       Allan Kearney, Nick Adams, Chris Funnel (BBYC)

5.       John Melville, Stuart Molloy, Cameron Horne (BBYC)
