Acknowledging the Passing of  the Waimakariri Sailing and Powerboat Club Patron and Mentor

Andrew Morris Holland ( Andy)  29 December 1934 – 19 November 2016

In 1962  Andy joined the Waimakariri Sailing Club.

A highlight of Andy's sailing was winning the Leander Trophy twice, in the R Class Championship as crew to Graham Mander in Frenzy, 1963 and 1965.

Building an International Moth  Andy represented New Zealand in three World Championships, Napier 1973, Okinawa 1975 and Brisbane 1978. In the 1980's Andy built a Rothmans ( renamed Pheonix) and mainly sailing with Michelle his daughter as crew won six New Zealand Championships in that decade.

In the 1990's and 2000's Andy competed in the Zephyr class, in which he was Measurer  and committee member for the Canterbury Zephyr Association. During that time he also served as the Chairman of the Canterbury Inter Club Match Racing organised by the Waimakariri Sailing and Powerboat Club over the 1990's decade. Acclaimed as the 1995 ' Event of the Year '  in the Canterbury Yachting Awards.

Andy  served as Commodore twice from 1972 to 1976 and 1983/84 and was  the Club's Patron. Appointed as Honorary Coach for the club by Yachting NZ, Andy has been an outstanding coach and mentor.

He has been the driving force behind many club activities, including the club rooms and later extensions. The club had paid tribute to Andy and Leona by naming the members lounge the “Andy Holland Family Room”

Andy and Leona were made Life Members of the Club in 1985. In 1992 Andy received A New Zealand Yachting Federation Honour Award for services to yachting and in 1993 a Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor of the Waimakariri District Council acknowledging  his services to the community.

Andy also managed to participate in a highly successful rugby playing and coaching career,  as a Canterbury representative  player and very successful coach of Canterbury provincial and club rugby sides.

Andy will be sorely missed.
