The Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 world championships were held in New Zealand for the first time at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club. It attracted more than 400 sailors and 260 volunteers and was broadcast live on Sky Sports and Sideline app, a world first for an Olympic class world championships.

The event was also one of only five regattas worldwide in 2019 to achieve platinum status in the Sailors for the Sea clean regattas programme.

The organisation of the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 world championships was a joint collaboration between Yachting New Zealand, the international 49er and Nacra 17 class associations and the Royal Akarana Yacht Club with support from the likes of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Orakei Local Board, Ngati Whatua Orakei and Sky TV.

The winners had been due to have been announced at a gala ceremony in Hamilton in June but will now be announced online in the next couple of weeks.
