2014 Optimist Nationals - Day two report

Issue date

Day 2 of the Toyota National Championship got off to a great start with a huge pod of dolphins putting on a magnificent display just off Manly Beach.

With PRO Harold Bennett calling the shots, sailors left the beach and racing started right on time. The wind steadily built and turned more towards the west throughout the day and we reached 18knots with the odd shower of rain.

Once again John Parrish on the Open fleet made the most of the breeze and with shifts and averages of 10-15knots he managed to get all three flights away with no general recalls, 9 races in total. Our top sailors showed consistency with Scott McKenzie holding onto first place, Lewis Anderson second and Sam Bacon third, with some close and exciting racing in between. The national title however remains wide open after two days with close contact within the top 10.

Kim Admore delivered another memorable day to our green fleet sailors, Samuel Charles leads the fleet with Blake McGlashan in second place and Seb Menzies in third. The green fleet completed two races and contended with a big squall passing through.

PRO Harold Bennett has done a great job keeping the regatta on schedule as we head into day three tomorrow, the last qualifying day for the Open Fleet.
