2013 2.4mR Open World Champs – Entries open

Issue date

Entries for the 2013 International 2.4mR class Open World Championships - being hosted by The Poole Yacht Club in Britain – opened on Friday 1 February 2013.

The event takes place from 6 - 14 September 2013, and all sailors should enter online via the event website at www.24mworlds2013.co.uk

Last year’s Worlds in Italy attracted its biggest ever fleet of 90 boats but organisers hope to attract another record-breaking field to Poole with up to 120 entry places available. Entries will close on Monday 19 August 2013 - after Friday 26 July a late entry fee will be charged.

Racing at the 2013 Worlds will take place over four days from Tuesday 10 September to Friday 13 September, all inside the world famous Poole Harbour.

Poole, on the UK’s South Coast, has an excellent, long-standing relationship with the International 2.4mR class. Competitors can expect typically tidal, flatter conditions with a South-Westerly prevailing wind.

The International 2.4mR World Championships are one of the most unique sailing events on the international racing calendar, with Paralympic and both able-bodied and disabled Worlds medallists, male and female, competing in the same boats on a level playing field. Typically between 25-30 percent of an International 2.4mR Worlds fleet is classified with a wide range in type and severity of disability.

Peter Saxton, Event Principal Race Officer and London 2012 Paralympics course race officer for the 2.4mR class, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to carry on the momentum of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games on home waters. I’m very much looking forward to working with the local race teams to deliver a World Championships that serves up exciting, fair racing and which The Poole Yacht Club can be proud of.”

Sweden’s Peter Andersson won the 2012 International 2.4mR Open Worlds title in Italy last September. Britain’s Helena Lucas, the only female in the London 2012 2.4mR fleet, had made history as she won Paralympic gold in Portland Harbour earlier that month.

Sponsorship opportunities for the event are still available. Interested parties should contact Fiona Rainback at admin@24mworlds2013.co.uk

Preliminary Sailing Instructions will be published on the official event website no later than 1 July 2013. To download the Notice of Race or for more information visit www.24mworlds2013.co.uk
