Q & A with Jack

How did you get into sailing?
I saw my older sister doing Learn to Sail and I really wanted to try it but I had to wait another 2 years before I was old enough.

What is your favourite thing to eat after a long day on the water?
Sushi or fried rice.

Where is your favourite place to sail?
Waitemata Harbour.

What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not sailing?
Riding motorbikes with my mates.

Who are your role models?
My Dad, Pierre Gasly (F1 driver), Kiran Badloe (Dutch Olympian and World Champion Windsurfer), Nims Purja (Nepalese Mountaineer and ex- British Special Forces Operator).

What is the best thing about sailing your youth class boat?
Going fast, feeling free, pushing myself, learning all the time.

What do you hope to achieve in sailing in the upcoming year?
I want to do the best I can at the World Champs, learn as much as I can and come back a better sailor.

How will you prepare for the Youth Sailing World Championships and which regattas will you be attending in the lead-up?
I will prepare by training as often as I can, pushing myself while I'm on my own and attending all regattas and AON clinics up until the world champs.

What do you hope to achieve in your sailing career?
I would like to sail at Lake Garda, do the IQ Foil World Games, (Volvo) Ocean Race, circumnavigation, and the Olympic Games.

What was the proudest moment of your sailing to date, and tell us how you felt?
Qualifying for the Youth Worlds - before Nationals I was injured and didn't know if I would be able to compete.  As the competition went on my confidence grew and after I won it felt like all the hard work I'd put in had paid off and I felt relieved and happy.  It took a while to sink in but then I started to feel really excited and a new type of nerves thinking about the world champs.
