Job Purpose:
The key purpose of the Coaching & Talent Development Manager is to provide leadership, performance management and strategic direction regarding Coaching & Talent Development provision within Auckland, as part of The Auckland Approach to Community Sport.
The Auckland Approach to Community Sport provides top to bottom alignment of strategies, and consistency and visibility of investment and work plans across Auckland.
The Coaching & Talent Development Manager will provide expertise in the ongoing growth and development of a C&TD network across the Auckland region, providing support to coaches and coach developers in relation to Auckland-based National Sports Organisations (NSOs) /Regional Sports Organisations (RSOs) clubs, schools and Regional Sports Trusts (RSTs), ensuring regional alignment of plans, systems and support structures.
In addition to the continued support of existing coaches/coach developers, it will be important to grow and retain new coaches/coach developers who are equipped to be able to support the following priority target groups as part of the Auckland Approach to Community Sport: Māori, Young Girls, Samoan, Indian, Asian and Chinese populations.
Accountabilities:
- Coaching and Talent Development Team - manage the day to day operation and work of the C&TD team (4.5 roles).
- Performance Management – establish performance targets for the C &TD team, with clear emphasis on accountability.
- Leadership, Advice and Best Practice - provide transparent and accountable leadership and expertise to NSOs, RSOs, RSTs across the Auckland region, in the form of advice, guidance and assistance with, and identification and sharing of best practice in, coaching, coach development, athlete pathways and talent development.
- Community Sport Senior Leadership Team – contribute to internal alignment across key operational areas.
- Best Practice - ensure access for all NSOs, RSOs, clubs, schools and RSTs to current best practice regarding coaching, coach development, athlete pathways and talent development.
- Targeting - work with NSOs, RSOs, clubs and local RSTs, to establish approaches that better engage Māori, Young Girls, Samoan, Indian, Asian and Chinese populations in coaching.
- Grow NSOs - prioritise coach development support for the Grow NSOs identified to increase participation in Auckland– currently; Football, Rugby League, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Touch, Badminton, Volleyball, Waka Ama and Softball.
- Projects and Agreements - manage the implementation of all coaching and talent development projects and initiatives, and the necessary contracts and agreements.
- Advisory Group - manage the ‘Coaching & Talent Development Advisory Group’ to Aktive.
- Industry Standards - establish recommended industry standards and practices for coaching and talent development e.g. qualifications, experience, vetting, PD etc.
- Agency Partners - Partner with relevant agencies on the development and implementation of new resources for coaching and talent development.
- Innovation - develop innovative solutions/tactics in response to meeting the needs of the sector, and lead the development and subsequent implementation of future coaching and talent development strategies for Auckland, ensuring there is strategic alignment across national, regional and local levels.
- Strategic Planning - contribute to organisational strategic planning.
- Operating Systems - develop and implement appropriate operating systems ensuring operational and financial efficiency.
- Communication - maintain effective communications between all parties.
Reporting:
- Reporting - prepare detailed progress reports on behalf of Aktive and the Aktive Group as and when required.
- Monitoring and Evaluation - lead the development of an effective monitoring and evaluation approach that demonstrates the impact of the work delivered against KPI performance.
Finance:
- Budget - manage all associated coaching and talent development budgets and operate within them, maintaining financial records and ensuring cost effective delivery; comply with Aktive’s financial policies and procedures, and identify any potential oversights to the Community Sport Manager as early as possible.
- Funding Applications - make funding applications as required.
Relationships:
Establish and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders including e.g.
- NSOs/RSOs/clubs
- Sport NZ
- HPSNZ
- Auckland Council
- Local RSTs
- Iwi organisations
- Funders etc.
Experience and Knowledge:
- A degree or equivalent in coaching/sport management
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership capacity within Coach Development
- Experience in the implementation of change management
- Experience in strategic planning and operational implementation
- Knowledge and understanding of the sport and recreation sector in Auckland
