Yachting New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from clubs in becoming a RŪNĀ schools programme provider.
During this winter, Yachting New Zealand will run training sessions to help get your club on board, and during the first half of next season, will help you to get some schools to work with and to get ready to deliver the programme from the beginning of 2024.
We are looking to use SailGP in Auckland in term 1 of 2024 and the America’s Cup in Barcelona in term 4 as catalysts to get RŪNĀ up and running in your area.
RŪNĀ is a world-leading programme which encourages children to learn from the past so they can steer towards a more sustainable future.
It involves three modules:
-
Kōrinorino o Ngā Tupuna – Following in the wake of our ancestors (Social Studies and Local History - focuses on understanding local settlement stories).
-
Kōkōkaha – Harnessing the power of wind (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - focuses on designing sustainable energy solutions).
-
Moanamana – Building NZL’s Blue Belt (Science and Education for Sustainability - focuses on restoring marine ecosystems).
Each module is made up of in-classroom learning experiences delivered by teachers, supported by a sailing experience, and followed by a call for learners to take action. The modules are designed for students in years 5 through to 10 but can be easily adapted for older or younger children.
