Yachting New Zealand is refreshing the first module of its popular RŪNĀ engagement programme - and it could be just the thing to keep curious young minds busy these school holidays.
Originally developed as part of the official legacy programme for the 2021 America’s Cup, Kōkōkaha uses sailing and wind power to introduce students to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through hands-on activities and online learning.
It's one of three RŪNĀ modules aimed at helping clubs connect with their wider communities and build stronger relationships with schools and kura. Kōkōkaha was followed by Kōrinorino, which explores the history of sailing and local stories, and Moanamana, which focuses on marine conservation.
"Kōkōkaha has already reached thousands of students across the country, but we want to ensure the content stays fresh, relevant and inspiring," said Alisa Torgersen, Yachting New Zealand's education lead. "This refresh will make the modules even more accessible and engaging for teachers, students and clubs - from primary through to high school."
The review, supported by feedback from more than 30 teachers through the 2024/2025 RŪNĀ school feedback survey, is expected to be completed in time for Term 4. Updates will focus on curriculum alignment, differentiated activity levels and enhanced student engagement.
In the meantime, families and clubs can explore the existing Kōkōkaha learning experiences online, with activities available for home or holiday sailing programmes, by clicking here.
"If you've got kids or need ideas for holiday sailing programmes, jump online and try out some of the hands-on activities," Torgersen said. "And if your club wants to host a Kōkōkaha sailing experience for local schools in school term 4 and beyond, we'd love to hear from you."
