Issue date

BAY of ISLANDS SAILING WEEK

REGATTA RAMBLINGS    Issue #3 August 2013

www.bayofislandssailingweek.org.nz

January 22 -23 - 24, 2014

Some good news:  Firstly – Heineken is the beer sponsor for 2014, there’s nothing quite like a Heineken at the end of a day’s racing. Secondly ICOM has come on board assisting with new VHFs for Start Boat control.

And our first entry was Kia Kaha from Opua Cruising Club.
More entries are coming in as we speak.

David Hope Lewis is again in charge of the Bar – a pretty important job at any regatta. David is looking for some more Bar Volunteers; and yes you get a food voucher if you work over a meal period – along with Bar Shirts to wear and keep. Please email any interest to the Committee and David will make contact as required. info@bayofislandssailingweek.org.nz

The latest undertaking by the Bay of Islands Sailing Committee to help out our entrants is to have our Caterer Hughie, provide fast and easy breakfasts at the beer tent – along with coffee. Hughie is looking at ways to offer an efficient service to get crews on the boats in good time.

Island Racing Divisions 1, 2 and Non Spinnaker Divisions have been renamed to   Island Racing A – B & C respectively - on the web page. This is to avoid confusion with course numbers.

BOOKING YOUR MARINA:  Always an anxious moment for both boat owners and marina control. Basically there are not a lot of spare marinas. What the marina committee does is ‘ring around’ all permanent berth holders asking who will be away during regatta period, requesting the use of any empty berths. So at the time of your request there probably isn’t a berth on hand, but they then endeavour to accommodate boats as berths become available. Marina officers normally manage to fit everyone in – it’s a huge shuffle.  And there’s always space on the inside of the breakwater, using the water taxi service. Everyone gets fitted in somewhere – be patient.  And for this regatta the Marina Company has already set aside part of the marina specifically for multi hulls.
The good news is, the Opua Marina is scheduled in the next 18 months to expand the marina as far as Ashby’s Boatyard, providing a further 150 marinas and incorporating 40 multihull berths. This bodes well for Bay of Islands Sailing Week future regattas. So please have patience when you request your marina – it takes time.

Please read through the lists of Sponsors and if possible use their services.
