Learn to Sail

YNZ Learn To Sail

Whether it is intense racing, sailing around the world, or just an afternoon picnic cruise, sailing is a sport to be enjoyed by everybody!

Getting started

To give yachting a go, contact a yacht club near you to organise a visit and find out what events or courses are on locally. You can find a list of clubs in our Club Directory. Yacht clubs sometimes hold open days when you can try sailing and find out more about joining a club.

The NCEA sailing unit standards have been approved by NZQA. Credits can be used to meet the requirements of qualifications on the National Qualifications framework including NCEA.

NCEA sailing offers teenagers and other adults the opportunity to learn to sail. The course would normally be delivered by a Learn to Sail Coach either through a yacht club or a sailing school with which the student’s school has an arrangement for delivery of the course.

Not everyone can be an Olympic or world champion but, for many like Jo Aleh, it starts with a basic introduction to the sport to see if they like it.

Aleh is a two-time Olympic medallist but doesn’t come from a sailing background. She asked her parents if she could try the sport after watching Team New Zealand win the 1995 America’s Cup and was hooked from the moment she jumped in a yacht down at her local club.
