  • Downwind Slalom Drill

    Start the drill with a downwind start line, approaching from to windward. Set 3 marks below the start line. The boats must slalom downwind around the marks, rounding the bottom mark before heading upwind to the finish line. This drill has starboard, port and port bottom mark rounding’s.

    The F18 New Zealand Championships were attempted over the weekend of March 16/17 as part of Sail Akarana, however the sailors got blown off the water on Sunday, so no series was held as only three races were completed on Saturday.

    Mussanah Race Week concluded yesterday in Oman, and what a great week of sailing and cultural experiences it was. The race committee did a fantastic job getting us 14 races completed over the five days of racing. We had all onshore winds, ranging between five and fifteen knots. It was awesome practice to race at the same venue as our World Championship later this year, in similar conditions to what we can expect in November.

  • Meet the 2013 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team: Laser Radial

    Chances are you have already heard about Andrew McKenzie… he is one of New Zealand’s rising stars in single handed dinghy sailing. Andrew has been selected to sail for New Zealand in Cyprus at the 2013 ISAF Youth World Championships in the Laser Radial. The Kohimarama Yacht Club sailor has plenty of international competition under his belt having represented New Zealand at the 2008 Optimist World Championships, competed in Canada under Yachting New Zealand’s CORK scholarship in 2011, sailed in Laser Radial Regattas across the ditch in Australia and in the UK. And Andrew was a member of the 2012 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team that sailed in Dublin last July.

  • Hamilton Yacht Club celebrates 75 Years

    Hamilton Yacht Club celebrates its 75th Jubilee over April 12 and 13 coinciding with the closing regatta for the season. The Club has produced many champions despite operating on possibly the smallest piece of water in the country. Lake Rotoroa is 156 acres, nominally about the size of Westhaven, but the area available for sailing is considerably less, given the shallow areas around the shores and the areas best avoided because of wind shadows cast by trees.

  • RNZYS Harken Schools Regatta: Hutt International Boys lead on day one

    George Gautrey and his crew of Callum Pritchard, Dan McDowall and Jono Francis representing Hutt International Boys School from Heretaunga in Upper Hutt, take the lead on day one of the HARKEN Schools Regatta. With a total of 11 points overall the H.I.B.S Boys had an impressive 4 wins and 2 second places after a fantastic day on the water. Gautrey commented “It was a very good day; we started off well but had a few problems, then brought it together for the rest of the day.”

  • ISAF Sailing World Cup / Palma: Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre will test the Rio 2016 racing format

    The 44th edition of the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre for Olympic classes, the first European event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, has been chosen by ISAF to test the racing format to be used at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre, to be held in the bay of Palma from 30 March to 6 April with the participation of the top world sailors of Olympic and Paralympic classes, will use a new racing format combining innovation and simplicity and aims at having the fairest event possible following the request from ISAF.
