  • Emirates Team New Zealand update - five points from five starts

    Emirates Team New Zealand collected another round robin point at San Francisco today. Five points from five starts – four races not being contested – and Emirates Team New Zealand - is at the top of leaderboard with five points, with Luna Rossa on two and Artemis zero.

    Day two of the Optimist World Champs has had a mix of highs and lows. The wind ran pretty much to forecast with a shifty and slight Ora breeze of 12 knots lasting for most of the first race of the day, it was a race where mother nature played her part and despite all of the kiwis starting well and rounding the top mark in a good position in each of their respective flights (there are four flights), only Leonard Takahashi-Fry managed a top ten placing. The rest of the team lost ground on their downwind and final upwinds as the shifts became even more variable.

    With racing now underway New Zealanders are glued to the spectacle of Emirates Team New Zealand’s AC72 competing in San Francisco for the Louis Vuitton Cup, but there’s a group of seven young men who are paying close attention. They are the NZL Sailing Team with ETNZ and in six weeks time it will be their turn to take to the stunning San Francisco Bay for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and race the fast, exciting AC45 catamarans on the same race track that their senior counterparts are competing on now.

    The first day of the regatta dawned dull and overcast with virtually no breeze - but the locals said the wind would come and it did with an Ora wind arriving around 11am and whilst it started off a little shifty by the time racing was underway it was a good 15-18 knots with a few good gusts to watch out for.

  • 2013 Opti World Champs: NZ Optimist Team get set for racing in Italy

    The last two days before the 2013 Optimist World Championships has seen plenty of activity and the town of Garda, Italy has filled with opti sailors, supporters and all their gear - there are certainly some great sites to be seen with teams all loaded up and truly set to travel around Europe. Several teams have been 'in camp' for two months doing a circuit around Europe and the confidence amongst these teams is high.

    The 2013 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team have returned more solid results from day two of the Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships on now in Limassol, Cyprus. The New Zealand crews are now all within the top six of their respective fleets with Isaac McHardie (Hamilton Yacht Club) and Micah Wilkinson (Ngaroto Sailing Club) still leading the SL16 event and Sam Barnett and Zak Merton (pictured above) (Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club) improving to 3rd overall in the boy’s 420.

  • NZL 420 Team at the French Nationals - Practice Day

    Happy Bastille Day. The French revere July 14th like the Americans do the 4th of July. Picture the scene of the National Day, the start of the French summer holidays in a seaside town, 27 - 30 deg heat, packed beach, bands playing ...and in the middle of it all and in the hottest part of the day, a major running race exactly where 88 420s are parked. The three Kiwi teams are at Plenuef Val Andre in Brittany, France's Norwest corner and a very beautiful part of the world.
  • 2013 NZL Yachting Trust Optimist World's Team - Lake Garda

    Alastair Gifford and Henry Haslett were the first of the team to arrive and they managed a catamaran sail on their first day followed by two days of training in light conditions. Nick Egnot-Johnson and Leonard Takahashi-Fry arrived fresh from their racing in the Queensland Youth regatta and Tom Fyfe landed safely after a sail on Artemis's AC45 in San Francisco Bay. Coach Susannah Pyatt has settled the team into a routine of fitness, strategy and sailing.

    In just 11 short months, Royal Akarana Yacht Club will fire the starting gun for the 22nd Auckland to Fiji race, Sail Fiji. Already the interest for this race has been overwhelming, with big names such as Australian entrant, Lahana (formally Konica Minolta), Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand putting their hands up for the tropical challenge. Ed Psaltis, one of the three owners of AFR Midnight Rambler also from Australia, has also put forward his expression of interest for the race.

    Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have sealed the deal today taking out the 2013 SAP 49er European Championships in Arhus Denmark. Alex Maloney and Molly Meech also secured a podium finish taking bronze in the 49erFX European Championship, with a further two top nine results for New Zealand including 5th for Natalia Kosinska at the RS:X European Championships and 9th for Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski in the 49er fleet.

    A group of young kiwis have been lining up across the ditch at the 2013 OAMPS Insurance Brokers QLD Youth Week and two have come out on top of their fleets. Young Timaru sailor Cullen Le Roy has won the Laser Radial division and Leonard Takahashi Fry from Murray’s Bay Sailing Club in Auckland has won the Optimist Open fleet at the regatta sailed at Brisbane’s Royal Queensland Yacht Club between 2nd and 6th July.

    New Zealand sailors are in 2nd, 3rd and 9th overall as the 2013 SAP 49er European Championships hit the midway mark and the standings continue to change dramatically day to day as nearly all crews struggled for consistency in light winds on day three at Arhus, Denmark today. Today’s official report from Denmark says; “A tricky day with the light wind forcing fleets to hold ashore, until the breeze filled in enough for racing. But only the lightest of breezes filled in, with puffs occasionally getting above six knots.”
