Tawera took line honours for a third consecutive day in the Bay of Islands last weekend to win the 2017 New Zealand Millennium Cup.
The Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta is the biggest event of its kind in New Zealand and was described by yachting commentator Peter Montgomery last year as "the best big boat regatta" in the country.
As one of the premier yachting events in the Southern Hemisphere, Bay of Islands Sailing Week regularly attracts around 100 boats and 1000 sailors from around New Zealand and overseas. The ethos of the regatta is one of all-inclusive and fun racing, where boats of all shapes and sizes - from sports boats to superyachts - can compete.
The year 2017 will be a special one for Bay of Islands Sailing Week, as the biggest regatta of its kind in New Zealand turns 15 years old this month.
The first Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta was held in 2003, with 39 boats competing across four divisions. The idea for the regatta came from Opua couple Tony and Nina Kiff, and the event's aim is still just as Tony described it in 2003: "to offer sailors a yachting event for keelboats, trailer yachts and sports boats, while showcasing the Bay of Islands as a magnificent sailing and holiday destination."
Yachting New Zealand will be running Sailing… Have a go! days at various venues across the country during the summer holidays.
Sailing... Have a Go! days will be run in the Bay of Islands, central Auckland and lower South Island during the week of January 23-27 to give Kiwi kids the chance to experience the fun and excitement of sailing.
