The NZL Yachting Trust Optimist Dinghy Worlds Team 2012 are hosting a fundraiser at the Murrays Bay Sailing Club on Saturday 23 June 2012.

Anybody is invited to come along to this fun party to support the team before they head off for the 2012 Optimist World Championships at Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic in July.

2013 Central Triangle Race


The 2013 Central Triangle Race starts from Wellington on 2nd March 2013 with the first leg of 195 nautical miles to Akaroa. Leg two takes the fleet 350 nautical miles north to Napier with the final 205 nautical mile leg taking the fleet back to Wellington.

2- 24 March 2013

Leg 1: Wellington to Akaroa- 195 nautical miles

Leg 2: Akaroa to Napier- 350 nautical miles

Leg 3: Napier to Wellington – 205 nautical miles


YNZ remembers Life Member Hugh Poole


Yachting New Zealand is saddened to announce the passing of past President and life member Hugh David Poole on 3 June 2012 at age 87.

Hugh dedicated more than half a century to our sport, as a competitor, boat owner and Manager of the yachting section of the New Zealand Olympic Team 1960 &68, and was inducted as a life member of Yachting New Zealand in 2008.  He was awarded the (then) New Zealand Yachting Federation Honour Award in 1990 for service to our sport, and is also a life member of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and Heretaunga Boating Clubs.

Neville Crichton- Companion of the NZ Order of Merit


New Zealander Neville Crichton has been named a Companion to the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and yachting.

Neville has a long and impressive yachting background, which all started when he first one the P Class Bay of Plenty Championships in 1957. From there he eventually progressed to big boat sailing, through the Admirals cup, Kenwood cup, World 2 Ton Cup, Sydney to Hobart, Fastnet and the list goes on.  

Three more sailors named to Olympic team

Yachting New Zealand is pleased to announce that three more sailors have been confirmed to the London 2012 New Zealand Olympic Team.

Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner in the Men’s Keelboat (Star) and Dan Slater in the Men’s One Person Heavyweight Dinghy (Finn), were confirmed to the team today by the New Zealand Olympic Committee selectors.

“We’re honoured to be named to the New Zealand Olympic Sailing Team” said Star sailor Jim Turner after his selection.  “It’s an important milestone to tick off on our way to the big one”.

Team Elliott 5.9 are the Champion of Champions

The newly revived Champion of Champions regatta trophy was claimed by Team Elliott 5.9 skippered by Cameron Horne with crew Grant McKinnon, Andrew Clarke, Phil Quinn and Andy Robertson.  This team had a very successful regatta with six bullets, four seconds and a DNS in the final race of the regatta.

“We had a fantastic regatta and our team is pretty happy to be the Champion of Champions,” said Horne. “It’s good to be back at RAYC racing and although the Platus are a bit of a handful, the challenge was great.”
