The Race - Friday December 1 2017
Since 2001, this epic race across the unpredictable Cook Strait has combined the excitment of offshore racing with the exhilaration of releasing a new vintage of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc into our capital city from the mainland.
This unique yacht race is loosly based on the traditional “Beaujolais Nouveau” where the first Beaujolais wines were transported from France to the UK.
Starting just outside the entrance to Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds, our hardy skippers often push the limits of their yacht and crew in potentially testing condtions to be the first to deliver their wine across the finish line in
Wellington Harbour. In 2016, 43 yachts with 258 crew raced across Cook Strait, all safely arriving with their bottle of Sauvignon Blanc intact.
The WineWorks Marlborough Wine Race is a spectacular event which is growing and evolving at a fast pace and is now recognised by Yachting New
Zeland as a major event on the national calendar - you won’t want to miss it! This year we expect extended coverage by reporters from Boating NZ,
Dominion Post, Capital Magazine, Radio NZ as well as local publications and numerous social media sites. Such is the popularity and prestige of winning the coveted Wine Marlborough Line Honours trophy that we are already receiving entries for the 2017 event.
This year two significant developments will see the potential for more wineries to take part reflecting the successful diversity of grape varities grown in
Marlborough, wineries are now able to enter any new release, although we do expect to see our world famous Sauvignon Blanc featuring strongly.
Secondly, continuing the tradition of our sponsors and winery crews sailing across Cook Strait in the race, in conjunction with Wine Marlborough we have introduced a Friday evening Twilight three race series starting on Friday 20
October. Wine Marlborough will then host special wine tastings, post race, at the club providing an opportunity to meet our other sponsors, winery entrants, the yacht skippers and crews in a friendly and fun environment and of course in the beautiful setting of Queen Charlotte Sound.
The Wine Marlborough Twilight Series dates are 20 October, 3 November and 17 November.
In 2015 we established a partnership between the race and Life Flight and we are delighted to be able to continue this mutually supportive relationship.
