Buddy Learn to Sail Coach

A Buddy Learn to Sail Coach has attended a Learn to Sail Coach (Dinghy) Course, but is under the age of 15, so legally not allowed to drive a powerboat.  Buddy coaches are advised to help out Learn to Sail Coaches, and Master Learn to Sail coaches, to gain knowledge and skills required under supervision. Once a buddy coach has turn 15, they may apply to become an Assistant Lear to Sail Coach. 

Assistant Learn to Sail Coach  

An Assistant Learn to Sail Coach has attended Learn to Sail Coach (Dinghy), but has not completed all criteria in order to become a qualified Learn to Sail (Dinghy) Coach, or is under the age of 18.  Assistant Coaches may assist with teaching the Learn to Sail (Dinghy) Programme, however they must be teaching in conjunction with a qualified Learn to Sail (Dinghy) Coach.

Learn to Sail Coach 

A Learn to Sail Coach is a competent Coach who has been trained and assessed to teach up to Level 2 of the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail (Dinghy) Programme.  The Dinghy Learn to Sail Coach (Dinghy) qualification is gained by completing and passing a two and a half day course delivered by Yachting New Zealand’s accredited facilitators.  Participants are assessed on their sailing skills, teaching skills, and powerboat handling. Master Learn to Sail Coach

A Master Learn to Sail Coach is a competent Coach who has been a LTS for at least 4 years and has had experience in organising LTS programs, and is looking to mentor buddy and assistant coaches within their club. The Master Learn to Sail Coach (Dinghy) qualification is gained by completing a revalidation form when their LTS coach qualifcation is up for renewal after 4 years, or whenever the coach would like to apply for the qualification after at least 4 years.  Click here to find the revalidation form.

Cost: $180

A Keelboat Coach is a competent and experienced Keelboat, Multihull or Trailer Yacht Coach who has been trained and assessed in the teaching of sailing to groups.  A Learn to Sail (Keelboat) Coach will be graded Level 1, 2 or 3 and can teach to that level of the Learn to Sail (Keelboat) Programme.  This is a 2 1/2 day course. This course targets coaches who are coaching learn to race sailors through to sailors of a top regional level. This course will be of a major benefit to all Club’s advancing their sailors out of learning how to sail to learning how to race and race competently. Cost: $225

Regatta Coach is aimed at those who coach to a high standard at a regional, national and international level.  This course is to further your development as a coach so you and your sailors will perform to a higher level. You are trained to coach race techniques and racing skills. Regatta Coaches are assessed in their coaching skills at a racing level, as well as having a good level of knowledge as a racing sailor. If you are a head coach at your club and/or take sailors to national or international regattas this course is for you. Click here for the course outline.

Cost: $225

A performance coach has the skills to coach racing sailors at YNZ High Performance Academy level or sailors to International Regattas including Olympic events. Anyone can attend the specialised modules 1 through 6, but to gain the Performance Coach qualification you must have sat the Regatta Coach (or RPL), and have experience coaching at the international level. Cost: Free

Olympic coaches are those elite level coaches who are coaching sailors to an Olympic Level. This qualification is awarded to a coach who has a vast amount of experience and success at world class events and demonstrates mentoring and leadership abilities. Training Required:  Be on the carded coach scheme or similar, which involves seeking professional development in areas which the coach deems necessary at that level. Inclusive Coaching

Cost: Free

The Inclusive Coaching Workshops are a great opportunity for coaches of all levels to add a free qualification and experience to their coaching toolbox. It is especially important for LTS Coaches (previously, Club Instructors) and those that may be delivering YNZ's Learn to Sail Level 1 & 2 disability supplement, a guide to modifying the LTS Syllabus to suit a sailor with a physical disability.  Not only will attendees learn a set of useful techniques and background knowledge for working with disabled sailors, this learning can be applied to a mixed environment where a coach may have a range of ability or experience within one group.
