The Waikato Thames Yachting Association has a fleet of 420 yachts in the region.
Their primary uses will be to:
- Train high school students to sail
- Establish yachting as schools team sport
- Foster sailing as an inter school team sport
- Encourage adult and child double handed sailing
Several milestones are in the process of being ticked off.
- A trailer has been constructed; 10 meters long with ramps at the rear (like a car transporter) will house 6 yachts and their rigs.
- A coach boat, (an Aquapro Seamaster 3.8 semi ridged centre console) and beach trailer have been purchased and are in use.
- Funding for six 420 yachts is complete. Part of the package will include training sails, a little smaller than the standard sail, and more suited to the primary purpose of training new sailors.
- Six 420’s have been purchased and are in use.
- A tow vehicle has been purchased.
The employment of a manager/coach are also on the plans.
