Detailed presentation about Sailing... Have a Go!
How does it work?
Yachting New Zealand have provided a variety of programme structures that will fit in with schools. Programmes consist of a variety of activities and games which focus on three parts of the school curriculum:
- Physical and Personal Development
- Science and the Environment
- Technology
A fully qualified Yachting Instructor and an assistant will deliver the programme to 12 students at any one time. Yachting New Zealand recognises the need to provide flexible programmes and have developed a choice of programmes:
Option 1: Half Day ’challenge’ - 2 half day sessions for 12 students a session.
Option 2: Full day ’challenge’ - A full day’s programme for 12 students (the most popular option with schools).
What is required from the school?
- The school is responsible for the transport of the participants to and from the venue.
- Yachting New Zealand requires the school to provide at least one Teacher or Parent to be present during the course of the programme. We recommend that the teacher/parents that will be attending are enthusiastic and prepared to get involved with the programme. They are welcome to Have a Go! as well.
- The school is responsible for providing Yachting NZ the application form which gives a detailed list of the participants and the teacher/parent responsible. This must be provided no later than one week prior to the booking.
- Yachting New Zealand have put in place a fee of approximately $300 per day, which works out to $25 per child for the full day, or $15 per child for the half day programme.
- Cancellation: Due to the high demand for this programme a minimum of 4 weeks notice is required. Should a booking be cancelled less than 4 weeks from the booking date a 50% charge will apply.
What resources does Yachting New Zealand supply?
- Sailboats- 6 (single handed) Optimist dinghies, 2 (two handed) Dinghies, 1 Weta Trimaran, one coach boat, protective clothing and all necessary safety equipment.
- All equipment is transported in a fully enclosed 6.5 metre trailer to a local yacht club.
- One fully qualified Instructor to deliver the programme.
***NEW to the Programme – Weta Trimaran**
We extensively trialed this new boat in our Northern unit last season with a view to including it in the programme in each region. The Weta proved to be very versatile and safe in a variety of conditions.
It was fantastic for children who initially were nervous about sailing, building their confidence by going out with an Instructor and other children. It really does add another fun factor and was highly utilized during the trial.
Another important aspect of the Weta is it’s suitability for children (or adults) with a physical disability, and it’s inclusion will now allow the Sailing…Have a Go! programme to be extended to those children. We are delighted, and very excited, to have now secured funding through the Halberg Trust to go ahead and purchase the 3 boats and modify our trailers to carry them.
* Our Instructors have all completed the Inclusive Coaching Module of the Halberg Trust’s No Exceptions Training. This training enables our instructors to be confident, knowledgeable and creative in adapting the programme to suit children with a disability.
What resources does the host yacht club supply?
- The participating Yacht Club will provide club facilities, coach boat and an on the water Assistant to help our fully qualified instructor present the programme.
- A flyer or brochure giving details of the club, contacts and the club’s Learn to Sail programme or alternatively supply Yachting New Zealand with this to distribute to participants.
- Where possible, Yacht Clubs will provide Yachting New Zealand with information regarding increased membership resulting from the Sail…Have a Go! programme.
