PHRF Applications & Revalidations

Applying for a PHRF Certificate

Download and complete the application/revalidation form in full, sign it and return it to Yachting New Zealand. All measurements must be metric (metres and centimetres) and any incomplete application will be returned to you for completion.

PHRF certificates cost $70 for a new application or for a validation, plus $40 for urgent processing of an application if the request is within four working days of the start of the race it is required for.

Once it’s been processed you will get a copy of your PHRF certificate, including measurements, and your race history, by email and post.

Certificates for the current year expire on 31 May, and revalidations can be accepted from 1 May.

The Rules of PHRF

PHRF is a performance based system, which adjusts according to your race history.

When racing under PHRF please ensure that you read the PHRF Rules, and understand the main concepts:

  • You must declare any changes that affect the performance of your boat: This includes for example changing to a longer prod, adding weight to the keel, or adding bigger sails, as well as changes that don’t exceed measurements but which do affect performance, such as a square topped mainsail. But it doesn’t include replacing like with like.
  • PHRF is self regulating. If you believe a competitor is not racing within his/her measurements, you should protest them on the racecourse. Clubs using PHRF will make certificates available for competitors to view, and they will also be available online soon.

Who else races under PHRF and what are their handicaps?

A full list of boats on the National Yacht Register with current PHRF handicaps can be obtained in the online Boat Search and Handicap Lists. Simply enter the boat name/sail number in the box provided. The names of any PHRF registered boats in the system will be highlighted in blue. Click the name to access measurement data and race histories.

What if I’m not happy with my PHRF?

Firstly, check your race history by searching for your boat in the boat database. PHRFs are updated on a regular basis for any boats that are sailing outside of their average. Are all of your PHRF races included on the certificate? If not, ask your yacht club to ensure that race results are being forwarded to Yachting New Zealand. The PHRF system can only go off the results that are supplied by clubs and if this is not done then they are not entered into the system.

If you still believe that your handicap is incorrect, you can request a formal PHRF review be conducted. Contact Yachting New Zealand using the details below.
